On the Nikon D60
The bad shape of this card’s data writing capabilities came to the fore when we tested it on our Nikon D60. In the camera’s burst mode, which is in theory capable of capturing images at up to 3 fps, we noticed a slump from the 8th image on in our test of 30 shots in burst mode.

Despite its size, then, it’s probably not worth trying this card with a professional camera, given that some of these take images at up to 10 fps.

With this 16 GB card, Verbatim certainly isn’t targeting owners of simple digital compacts.  With so much storage capacity, the manufacturer has high-end digital reflexes in mind, like the Canon 1D Mark, or even HD digital camcorders.  Having already tested the 4 GB version, we were looking forward to good results on this huge card.

With this card’s writing speeds, we were a little disappointed.  It managed a speed of 8.7 MB/s while copying medium size files, much slower than the 4 GB card’s 11.1 MB/s transfer rate.  Copying 4 GB of data would take 7 minutes 50 seconds with this model, but filling the smaller model would only take 6 minutes 9 seconds.

When reading data, the tables were turned and the 16 GB card did better.  In fact, at 17.7 MB/s, it was extracting data at the highest speed that our card reader could handle, performing marginally better than the 4 GB card whose top score on this test was 16.7 MB/s.  To put that in context, though, extracting 4 GB would only be 15 seconds faster on this card than it would be on the other model.

Data transfer speeds (MB/s)

- Storage space

- Reading speed

- Writing speed

- Slows down digital reflexes

- Expensive – cheaper 16 GB cards are available

With so much space, it’s tempting to put this card into a high-end digital reflex. Unfortunately, though, the tests show its writing speed is just not up to the job. Testing it on our Nikon D60 really slowed things down, although it performed a more promisingly taking photos and long video clips on a digital compact.
