An entry level PND from Becker, the Traffic Assist Highspeed 7934 isn’t really new. Released more than 6 months ago, Becker once again loaned us this product that is still in their catalogue. It has, however, been updated with a new software version, the 1.2A (this number appears on the tape that seals the packaging), which will soon be in its 1.3.2 version to be compatible with Vista. Don’t worry if you purchase an older version, because you can always obtain an update on Becker‘s website.
In the catalogue we are able to compare it with its big brothers, the Highspeed II 7988 and Traffic Assist Pro. It actually shares the same basic characteristics, but lacks several options: There is no TMC, home charger, or USB port. So, you can’t directly connect your USB key on the unit. For this reason the MP3 player and JPEG picture viewer are less interesting, because you will have to systematically copy these files on a SD card. This is an unappealing task all the more so because the card is limited to 1 GB and already it can’t hold the entire map of Europe. The included CD, however, does have all of Europe and its use is required to update the memory card depending on the desired country of destination. Going through your PC is therefore obligatory.
Equipped with a 3.5 inch screen, its tactile keyboard is a bit tricky if you have large fingers. You have to make sure to touch the center of the key to avoid hitting the ones next to it.
But its main weakness is something common to all Becker models : the absence of traffic radar management. This Traffic Assist Highspeed 7934 is, therefore, definitely for those looking for a minimalist and low priced GPS. However, for as much you do get a quality product with a clear and practical interface (something common to all Becker models) and a very sensitive and quality receiver.
